Japan, India agree to boost maritime security cooperation

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Wednesday (December 28) signed a joint statement enhancing cooperation in maritime security activities in the Indian Ocean.

Australian Navy races to rescue Iranians in distress

AN Australian warship has rescued the crew of an Iranian vessel adrift in the Gulf of Aden with no food or water.

The captain of the motorised dhow sent out a distress call late last week saying his vessel was out of fuel, food and water off the eastern coast of Yemen.
The frigate HMAS Parramatta, 400 nautical miles away on a counter-piracy and terrorism patrol, "sprinted" to help and its helicopter found the dhow on Christmas Eve.

The hijacking of an Italian cargo vessel with seven Indian crew members on board off the coast of Oman by suspected Somali pirates on Tuesday takes the number of Indian seafarers taken hostage in 2011 to nearly 100. Of this, 63 were reportedly released.

TEHRAN – Iranian Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi announced on Monday that an attempt by pirates to hijack a Saudi Arabian tanker was foiled by the Jamaran destroyer during the Velayat-90 naval war games. 

“Last night, immediately after a Saudi Arabian oil tanker picked up a distress signal, the Jamaran destroyer was deployed to the region,” Mousavi said, adding, “The pirate boats escaped because of the destroyer.”

Judge withdraws from piracy case in Norfolk

A federal judge has recused himself from the case of the hijacking of a yacht that left four Americans dead after learning that the vessel is now being stored at a Portsmouth marina partially owned by his brother.

Mombasa Port plans Sh100m repairs to attract cruise ships

Two berths at the Mombasa port will be rehabilitated to accommodate cruise ships as Kenya prepares to increase its earnings from the lucrative tourism segment following improved security off the Somali coast.
The plans were shelved two years ago when piracy attacks cast doubt over the future of the business.

Pacific Fleet group wraps up call at Seychelles

NATO Shipping Centre today carries a report of a suspicious approach in the Arabian Sea yesterday, December 21st.
