It used to be said that a young man accepting a stranger’s offer of a free drink in a Bristol tavern in the 1600s risked ending up on board a privateer’s ship, and by the end of the week would be battling pirates off the coast of Africa.
But an event this week in the slightly less raucous surroundings of Lackham College in Wiltshire shows that little has apparently changed in 350 years.
