Engagement in Asia vital to America's balancing act

SINGAPORE -- The year 2011 has been marked by a growing assertiveness by China and its concurrent military buildup. Much also has been made about China's so-called anti-access area denial (A2AD) strategy.
Granted, China does not use the term explicitly, but it is widely known that China's use of the term “shashoujian,” or assassin's mace, is a rough equivalent to A2AD.
Shashoujian involves using asymmetrical weapons to deter future U.S. military involvement in the Asia-Pacific region.
