Shipping groups urge UN armed force to tackle Somali pirates

MANILA, Philippines — The United Nations should set up a force of armed military guards to tackle Indian Ocean piracy that is disrupting global trade, said groups representing 90 percent of the world merchant fleet.
The area resembles “the wild west,” the International Chamber of Shipping said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon distributed by e-mail Wednesday.
